The James Edgar & Jean Jessop Hervey Point Loma Library opened in September of 2003. The 25,000 square foot building is five times the size of the former Point Loma Library. Some funding came from donations, redevelopment money, and federal or state grants, but the Hervey family’s generous gift of $5 million enabled the project to proceed.

The Hervey Point Loma library is built with a nautical theme. The entry rotunda is decorated with a terrazzo map of San Diego and a replica of Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo’s flagship, San Salvador. Inside, a large boat made of wood is decorated with full sails, portholes, and a steering wheel. It leads to the children and young adult section where red, yellow and blue foam tugboats serve as seats for children’s reading and tables shaped like surf boards decorate the young adult area. A full periscope from the attack submarine USS Flasher rotates 360 degrees and enables viewers to see many miles in the community
