In Memory
At its March 8, 2012 meeting, the Board of Directors of the Point Loma Friends of the Library voted to establish $10,000 memorial funds for each of two people who have played important roles for the Friends and for the Point Loma Library.
Tom Goad, who died on February 4, 2012, was the President of the Friends of the Point Loma Library from 2002 to 2004, during the most important years of its existence when it was moving from an old, small, inadequate building to the beautiful building it now occupies.
Tom chaired meetings of the Friends in the old library building in 2002. Then he chaired meetings at the San Diego National Bank for three months while the library was closed and the old building was being torn down.
Finally the new library building had its grand opening in September 2003 and on October 10, 2003 the minutes report,
“President Tom Goad called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone to the first ever meeting of the Friends of the Hervey Point Loma Library.”
Tom had a broad vision for the library, which was shared by Christine Gonzales, who was the branch manager then and continues to be the branch manager today. They wanted the Hervey Point Loma Library to become the cultural center of the entire Point Loma community.
He was instrumental in bringing OASIS classes to this branch. Classes began with only 20 or so people attending the first few programs. Today, OASIS classes at the Point Loma Library boast an attendance of 70-100 people per class and thousands of people each year. Point Loma has become an Oasis model for other library branches.
During his years as President, Tom had the support of a wonderful Friends Board, whose most important member was his wife Shelby who is still on the board today.
Tom remained a member of the Friends Board until 2006 and then continued to be active in library events.
Elli Lorch, who died on March 2, 2012, has been the Program Chair of the Friends of the Point Loma Library since August, 2008. During this time she worked tirelessly to bring a wonderful variety of programs to the library. Among the programs she brought to the library are: Lighthouses of San Diego; a Family’s Collision with History: Austria, 1938; Building Kettenburgs, Point Loma Boat Builders; Heart Healthy Eating: Food for Thought; Migration and Meanderings; the Literary Case for Darwinian Evolution; An Evening at Suzy’s Zoo; Canal Cruising in the South of France; Frank Lloyd Wright and the Taliesin Fellowship; The War on Drugs and the Rule of Law in Mexico; Sunset Cliffs Natural Park; Ancient Persia, Modern Iran; Dear Guests, Beware the Wild Monkeys; Author Susan Vreeland; Literary Agent Sandra Dijkstra; the Sea Turtle Man; the Bee Lady; and Chasing a Dream in the Galapagos, a Personal Evolution. The Point Loma community was made richer by Elli’s work for the Friends.
Elli’s introductions of the speaker were always special, giving information and helping the audience to know the speaker. Her husband, Mike, created flyers for these programs, that not only gave information about the program, but also were works of art in themselves.
The commitment to the Point Loma Library of these two exceptional people is highlighted by the fact that the families of each have asked that donations in their names be given to the Friends of the Point Loma Library. These donations will be added to the Memorial Funds established by the board. These two funds will be used to support the library in ways that reflect the dedication of Tom and Elli. They programs will be announced after the FOPLL Board makes it decision.
